In my earlier post on White’s first move, we considered that black might launch an early raid with the Lion, giving this position:
Early raid by the Lion
Black can now clearly win the Go-Between on 9e. But White does not have to fear this. The proper response is now to play P – 8h, forcing Black to take the Go-Between immediately. If instead White were to play Ln – 6e, Black can respond with P – 9h, add the Dragon Horse on 4j into the attack.
Black replies with Ln x 9e – 9f. Now White can play Ln – 8e, again hitting the Black Lion:
Position after White brings out the Lion in defence to Black’s lion rush
In this position Black can either retreat the Lion to 7h, which is rather humiliating, but is probably the right move. Or s/he can support the Lion with GB – 9g. The latter is the more ambitious move, but it seems to me that Black cannot really hope to get an advantage from an early attack with such a slow-looking move. Experience seems to confirm that White can be happy with this position:
Black plays GB – 9g and White responds with his own Lion foray
We will look at possible continuations in a future post.
